What Is Bone Marrow Transplant?
Bone Marrow Transplant, or more commonly known as BMT, is the process of replacing damaged bone marrow with healthy bone marrow stem cells. The bone marrow is a fatty, soft tissue found inside our bones. The main functionality of the bone marrow is to produce blood cells. The immature stem cells in the bone marrow give rise to all of our different blood cells.
Procedure Before Bone Marrow Transplant
The bone marrow is one hell of a process. It is a very sophisticated and high precision process. So before the final transplant, chemotherapy and radiation are given to the patient. These are done in two different ways:
• Ablative (myeloablative) treatment
High dosage of chemotherapy and radiation is given to the patient to kill any cancerous cells.
This also, in turn, kills all the remaining healthy bone marrow allowing new stem cells to grow in the bone marrow.
• Mini TransplantLower dosage of chemotherapy and radiation is given to the patient before the final transplant.
This helps older patients and people with other health problems to receive a successful operation.
